I read this years ago in a children's book a senior stock-broker friend gave me. (Get to know rich successful people and pick their brains. Even if it is only the local merchant who has built a business over years.)

    THE FIVE LAWS OF GOLD

Gold comes gladly and in increasing quantity
to the man who will save not less than one tenth
of his earnings to create an estate
for his future and his family
(Save enough to accumulate but not so much that you have to raid the "savings" repeatedly)

    Gold labors diligently and contently
for the wise owner who finds for it profitable
employment, multiplying even as the flocks of the field
(Don't just let your savings sit, and especially don't splurge when you suddenly realize it has accumulated to a sizeable cache)

Gold clings to the protection of the cautious owner
who invests it on the advise of men wise in its handling
(You don't invest in the gem market based on the advise of your cousin who has never proven his own advice works, or people who say this or that biz would "clean up" if they have never operated such a business)

Gold slips away from the man who invests
it in businesses or purposes with which he is not
familiar or which are not approved by those skilled in its keep
    (Similar to the above)

Gold flees from the man who would force it
to impossible earnings or who follows
the alluring advise of tricksters and schemers
or who trusts in his own inexperience
    and romantic desires in investment
(Never invest savings in a get-rich-quick or illegal scheme)

Yup. They didn't teach this the senior year of high school. They are now teaching this to middle schoolers.

Did you mean this? The Five Laws of Gold from The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clayson

          1. Gold cometh gladly and in increasing quantity to any man who will put by not less than one-tenth of his earnings to create an estate for his future and that of his family.

          2. Gold laboreth diligently and contentedly for the wise owner who finds for it profitable employment, multiplying even as the flocks of the field.

          3. Gold clingeth to the protection of the cautious owner who invests it under the advice of men wise in its handling.

          4. Gold slippeth away from the man who invests it in businesses or purposes with which he is not familiar or which are not approved by those who are skilled in its keep.

          5. Gold flees the man who would force it to impossible earnings or who followeth the alluring advice of tricksters and schemers or who trusts it to his own inexperience and romantic desires in investment.

Vindu's View: Kids gain financial literacy
          By Vindu Goel

          Mercury News
Article Launched: 12/02/2007 06:22:25 AM PST

We teach our children to read. We teach them about the hazards of drugs and the importance of safe sex. We teach them how a bill becomes law and how elections work.

Somehow, financial literacy doesn't get the same attention, even though adults need to deal with money far more often than we vote or have sex.

The Stock Market Game is one small effort to change that. Funded by the securities industry's charitable foundation and approved by state education officials, the program provides computer tools and lesson plans to help schools teach students in grades four through 12 about the stock market and the basics of investing.

Teams of three or four students each get $100,000 in play money to manage. They compete with other teams in the region and the nation to get the biggest return on their investment and win prizes. About 60,000 Californians and 600,000 students nationally are participating this year.

I dropped into Agnes Kaiser's seventh and eighth grade math class at Crittenden Middle School in Mountain View last week to see the game in action.

Camped out in the computer lab, 11 teams were busy studying stock charts and placing trades.

"We just bought another 100 shares of Apple. Love it!" said Marissa Taylor, 13, who captains the current top-performing team. Taylor's four-girl group has been buying and selling Apple for weeks and also holds Coca-Cola, Nike and a Vanguard bond fund.

These kids don't look at sales or earnings - they start with companies they know and buy and sell based on which way the stock is moving.

"If it's been doing good for the last couple of weeks, we buy it," said Aye Myat, 12, who heads another team. "If it's losing 3 percent to 6 percent a day, we sell it."

I'm not sure that formula is a recipe for long-term success - ultimately, a stock's value tends to reflects the underlying fundamentals of the business. But since Kaiser's class started the game in October, most of her teams have beaten the S&P 500, the benchmark index of large stocks, by a few percentage points.

"They're feeling good about themselves," said Kaiser. And well they should - mutual fund managers would kill for that kind of performance.

Kaiser, a former chemical engineer who's been teaching the game in her math classes for three years, said the students' pace of learning is especially impressive because some of them barely knew how a savings account worked when they started.

It turns out that studying the stock market is a surprisingly good way to learn middle-school math: percentage changes, positive and negative integers, graphs. The students also learn a lot about teamwork. "The most challenging part is working with a lot of people and coming to consensus," Kaiser said.

The students even learn computer skills that will come in handy when they're older: They have to chart their stocks on a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and make a PowerPoint presentation to their classmates.

It's a lot different from when I was a kid. My school tried to teach us about the stock market by giving us a pot of fake cash, telling us to "buy" some random stocks from the newspaper's listings and see where we stood after a few weeks. I didn't really learn anything about the markets until I graduated from college and became a reporter for the Wall Street Journal.

The Stock Market Game, found at www.stockmarketgame.org, doesn't cost schools anything. It's funded by securities firms and their Foundation for Investor Education. (In Silicon Valley, the Mercury News has partnered with Merrill Lynch to supply free newspapers to participating schools.)

In the 30 years the game has been running, nearly 10 million students have participated.

The securities industry obviously has a vested interest in helping people understand stocks and bonds. But frankly, everyone needs to learn about investing if they hope to fund their children's college education, buy a house or make smart decisions about their health care benefits and 401(k) plans.

Yet student financial literacy is shockingly low. Just 14.2 percent of high-school seniors thought stocks would outperform savings bonds and bank accounts over an 18-year time frame, according to a 2006 national survey by the JumpStart Coalition, which regularly tracks student financial literacy.

Good financial habits get set when we're young. So as you think about holiday presents for the children in your life, consider giving them a share or two of stock and spending some time teaching them about the markets.

It's a gift that's a whole lot more valuable than another game for the Wii or an iTunes gift card.

    1. Use everyone.
    2. Always take credit.
    3. Stab them in the back first
    4. Tell them you've got a plan to make it up to them.
    5. Never give anything anyway unless you are using it to improve your image.

Haven't tried it but from what I've seen it seems to work pretty well. And it's legal.

What moniker? BOINK? M? I don't know. I have another Tribe friend named M too. No big deal. I just wanted to distinguish as there was some big deal that went down on Tribe a few weeks ago and I want people to know that I have only one profile and no alts. The friends I have named Marvin are separate people too. And Marvin in Spain is really cool. : ) I thought it would be funny to find everyone on Tribe with the name Marvin and befriend them and we could call ourselves "The Marvins." Maybe start our own tribe. lol Like that rock band The Donnas. Do you think they are really all named Donna? I doubt it. But theyre still cool anyway. : )

mmm... this is very sad... but most of all it's VERY ignorant.

      it's COLOMBIAN.. with an O... not U.

and as a Colombian I find that very offensive, and it's thanks to ingorant drug users is why my country has a bad rep.

      • Re: Top 5 Ways To Get Rich ? ? ?

        Mon, February 25, 2008 - 6:18 PM
ummm...I don't think its the drug users that give your country the bad rep , I'm think'n its the coke growers and the cartels and the COLOMBIAN government that gives COLOMBIA the bad rep !
        • Re: Top 5 Ways To Get Rich ? ? ?

          Mon, February 25, 2008 - 6:28 PM
Colombian's don't consume the drugs, it's American's who do, and it's American drug users who give the cartels here their fiancial support which allows them to keep terrorizing inocent and good people here.

if Americans stopped using drugs, then there wouldn't be a "market" and the coke growers and cartels would have to find another way to make money and then there might finally be peace in my country.

if you know nothing about Colombian politics, then please don't comment about our Government.

I don't see consuming drugs as a bad thing. The current drug war / drug policy creates more bad than good. This book makes a great argument for legalization. Legalization would affect alot of people adversely but the growers would still be able to make about the same they do now. It's all the middleman people between the grower and the user that cause the problems. If it were legal it would go from grower to the store to the user. Many many problems would be solved. So why is it not legal still? Because it is more profitable for those in power to keep things the way they are? Illegal drug profits fund revolutions and "terrorism", etc.... What would be truly revolutionary is if evryone in the world were required to read this book and demand governmental policy change ASAP!!!

seems like this is a...what came 1st the chicken or the egg...kinda things!
I'm sorry but if the users of the drug did'nt have anything ta use....its like anything else...kill the problem at it's source...if the growing was'nt happening...If the government was'nt corrupt and allow itself to be bribed and threatened by the cartels...come on..the country isn't that big . I know that it's probablly thick in jungle and all the remoteness of it all...and I know that not all coke comes from this country but...
Ya can't blame the countrys bad rep on drug users of the world...
and ya can't blame it on american drug users ...cause its more than just them using the drug !
I think blame'n the users is a cop out to Colombia's own internal problems!
And as far as your countrys politics...I can only base my comments on the government in brief news snippets of corruption and the fear the politicos have of the cartels !

The positive effects of legalization as opposed to prohibition far outweigh the adverse effects on people of already suspect and questionable character! Everyone involved. Not just Colombians. The drug trade is international / global. Duh.

don't you know you can't believe everything you see on TV?
that's the biggest reason why most people from abroad have such an erroneous perception of Colombia.

before saying anything at all about Colombia I suggest you educate yourself a little bit more about my country.

So yer say'n the country's problem is just bad PR...?
Listen I'm sure its a beautiful country...and most of its population are really good down ta earth folks....but...
I don't do coke personally...I'm a weed man ! I like my chronic.....and it works out fer me just fine that even in the shitty climate of Canada I can grow some of the best weed in the world ! Meh...it's not quite legal here but I've been busted for grown 10 nice plants and only got a $500 fine !
Now I'm sure your country would'nt have as many problems if cocaine could be grown in the shitty climates of Canada ...but ...its got a pretty good monoply on it and the loot is good for a country on the low end of natural resources...for better or worse ...no?

If I wasnt a heart patient I'd still be doing coke. And my heart condition is congenital not due to drugs. Unfortunately I cannot do coke anymore. I love it but havent touched it for over 6 years now. The prohibition of it and all the negative consequences make it an ugly thing though and I'm not sure if I'd still be doing it or not anyway. A few friends tell me they havent done it in a year or have slowed down. I think they just tell me that because they think I want some and dont want to be the one that kills me. Apparently if I want some now I have to find it from someone I dont know. lol Good thing I dont want any. I mean I do but whatever. It's good my friends care about me. One fuckin' fuck put it in my face a couple of times. Totally oblivious. That's a friend? If he wasnt such a pussy I would have beat the shit out of him. I will probably never speak to him again.

If I l;ived in Colombia I would prefer the country to the city. Bogota seems like Bombay to me. Way to many people. Suburbia has changed me. What can I say. Now suburbia is even too dense and busy. I need to live out in the sticks where there is no traffic and people will not be in my way when I walk and will, in general, just leave me the fuck alone. : )

I wonder what the difference in population is between Bogota and Bombay. I think Bombay is WAY huger but truly have no idea.

if you had watched the video you would have seen it is not about Bogota.

I only showed a pic of Bogota because a lot of foreigners are surprised to see a "modern city" here. I think a lot of tourists are "disappointed" to see it's not "thick in jungle" here.

Colombia, I think, is one of the most diverse countries in the world.

Like now. : ) And just as you seem to be very sensitive to "foreigners" opinions of your country, you should also keep in mind that not all foreigners are ignorant of the things youre mentioning.
